I was watching Jerry McGuire on TBS last weekend, and in the final scene Rene Z.'s character says, "Shut up. [Jerry looks puzzled] You had me at 'Hello.'"

My question: isn't this a direct reference to another movie? If so, which one?

I believe that's a direct reference to Jerry Maguire. It's been spoofed so many times since then that it just feels like it's been around longer.

Pretty much anytime I hear someone say "shut up" in a movie I am reminded of the scene in Bull Durham where the bat boy looks at Crash Davis and says, "get a hit". Crash looks back at him and says, "shut up kid".

I think I like that movie too much.
