Empire's 500 Greatest Movies of All Time.

    http://www.empireonline.com/500/1.asp

Thoughts? I thought this might be an interesting discussion since there seems to be a lot of movie folk on here, especially Mr. Evans. I haven't made it through the whole list yet, but right off the bat, Superman Returns as one of the best 500 movies of all time? Really? And Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon seems waaay too low for my tastes. More later!

The top 50 or so of that list is an absolute joke. There are many problems in there, but to put Batman: The Dark Knight as the 15th best movie ever is laughable, as is putting Back to the Future at 23(Die Hard at 29?!).

But rather than focusing on the multitude of overrated films, I'll just mention a few that are criminally underrated(as in deserving of spots at least 100 higher than they are listed):
In the 400s, Princess Mononoke, The Deer Hunter, and Do the Right Thing lept off the page at me as deserving considerably higher.
In the 300s, Casino, Rocky, All About Eve, and even Airplane should be given considerably better marks.
In the 200s, Ran, Das Boot, and The Philadelphia Story are all far too low.
In the 100s, Paths of Glory, The Searchers, and Bridge Over the River Kwai are all way too low(I'd argue that Amadeus is underrated too, but not 100+ spots underrated as it sits at 136).

That's just my first thoughts running down the list. Perhaps I'll have more thoughts if I look at it some more. But some of the inclusions are just... stunning(apparently Ron Burgandy really was legendary).

More like the most violent movies of all time. (I just looked at the top 100.) That top 100 is a joke.

    It insists upon itself.

I was glad to see genre movies get a fair shake and particularly to see Evil Dead in the top 50.

Lists like this are incredibly subjective. Are we measuring "top" by entertainment value or cinematic influence or some absurd notion of what is or is not art?

I actually like it better when organizations list the top 100 mystery movies or 100 comedies or something like that. At least in those cases I have a better idea of what the criteria appears to be.

I mean, how can I possibly judge Stripes against Bridge Over River Kwai? They are completely different films with different purposes and aims. I find the whole exercise to be silly.

That said, I may go ahead and rank all the films I saw this summer at some point -- just for the heck of it
