    "A Dark Anniversary"

The series in the Atlantic was written by William Langewiesche, and was later published in book form as "American Ground:Unbuilding the World Trade Center". The magazine published the series in early 2002 as I recall.

It is riveting, and there are accounts of behavior by some of the rescue personnel that put Langewiesche in, what would be generously described, as less than good stead with the NYFD.

You may be able to access the article in the Atlantic on-line archive or start with this:

I really didn't appreciate MSNBC running the realtime feed, from 7 years ago, this morning.

For the second time in my life, I turned on the news at 9:02am and watched a 767 slam into Tower 2 -- it was bad enough the first time, I really didn't need to relive it this morning, in realtime.

I was in D.C. that morning, living across I-295 from the Pentagon (a half-mile to the E-ring, according to Google Earth, working in a think-tank two blocks from the White House.

    My story:

Thank you for sharing your story. Reading first hand accounts brings back my own memories of the day, and for a moment I feel like it still is September 11, 2001. I hope we never forget what happened that day and work to prevent another September 11th ever happening anywhere.
