The real life Crash Davis? The REAL LIFE Crash Davis?
The REAL Crash Davis was a 1940 Duke graduate -- and captain of the Duke baseball team. Lawrence Davis got the nickname, Crash, which Ron Shelton stole for his movie, when he was 14 years old and collided with another outfielder. He was known as Crash Davis when he was at Duke. He played three years with the A's in the American League, served in the Navy during the latter part of the war, then returned to Duke for grad school after the war. During this time, he played for the Durham Bulls.
Shelton, the writer and director of Bull Durham, knew the real Crash Davis and even gave him a bit part in the movie Cobb.
Please don't confuse the character Kevin Costner played in Bull Durham with the real Crash Davis ... a Duke grad!
