Sad news out of Winston-Salem

A RJ Reynolds High School football player died this week as a result of injuries sustained during a game. The incident happened on a routine block and there was no malicious intent:

(note: This was the only link I could find with a picture. The article says he was "critically injured", but an update says that he had died.

He was an Eagle Scout, and leaves behind a brother and a sister. Thoughts and prayers are with his family.

Matt graduated from Summit School at the end of last school year. My brother who teaches at Summit spoke very highly of Matt and his accomplishments at there.

That is really sad.
I played high school ball and accidentally broke a guy's ribs once. I had no idea it happened when I tackled him but it really sucked seeing him in an ambulance and then learning that his ribs were broken. I couldn't imagine the grief of laying a block on someone that eventually led to their death. All my thoughts are with Matt, his family, friends, teammates, and the poor guy who blocked him.
