Group B started the day in Asia. China bounced back with a 92-67 win over Qatar thanks to 30 points from Guo Ailun. The Philippines had a sluggish start against Iraq but started the second half well to win 84-68 with 16 points from ex-Hawaii player Christian Stanhardinger. Lebanon took out some frustrations on Rustam Yargaliyev and disappointing Kazakhstan 96-74, but had to settle for second place, meaning an extra game. Marshall Plumlee is one of sixteen players selected for the Team USA training camp that starts this week to pick the team that will compete in the AmeriCup. A good performance here will put him in consideration for qualifying games assuming he returns to Westchester without being involved in the NBA.

More spots were secured in European pre-Qualifiers as there will be one more set of games on Saturday.
Dzanan Musa had 27 points and 6 rebounds and Bosnia and Herzegoving won the elimination game in Bratislava 92-74 over Slovakia. 19 points from Radoslav Rancik and 12 points from Andre Jones were not enough for the hosts to avoid last place. The other game would award the winner a spot in the next round and it was Sweden surviving some stumbles to beat Armenia 93-70 in Uppsala as Marcus Eriksson had 10 points and 8 rebounds. Ryan Boatright had another great game from the naturalized player position with 32 points and 8 rebounds and Andrew Chrabascz had 17 points as well in the loss. Well, we had to send a team to be allowed to participate in World Cup qualifying, but the games themselves do not mean anything. As I mentioned earlier, players are being evaluated for rosters in upcoming qualifying games, so the players in this training camp will be taking it pretty seriously.
The other two quarterfinals were played in Asia. Australia got their first real challenge, but used a strong second half to beat China 97-71. Jason Cadee had 20 points, Mitchell McCarron had 17 points, and Daniel Kickert had 16 points. New Zealand also faced a challenge, but used a big fourth quarter to set up the Oceania clash with a 98-70 win over Jordan. Tohi Smith-Milner had 19 points and 7 rebounds, Finn Delany had 17 points and 9 rebounds, and Jordan Ngatai had 10 points. Mahmoud Abdeen had 24 points in the loss.

My recap of Day 2 at the FIBA Women's Afrobasket can be found here:
http://www.womensbasketball247.com/2...2-august-19th/
The semifinals were played in Asia after a day of rest. The first game was between the Oceania rivals as Australia won 106-79. The St. Mary's duo led the way as Matthew Hodgson had 15 points and 6 rebounds and Daniel Kickert had 13 points and 6 rebounds as ex-DII player Nicholas Kay added 11 points and 10 rebounds. For New Zealand, Tohi Smith-Milner had 13 points and 6 rebounds and ex-South Dakota player James Hunter had 10 points. Iran took a big lead early on South Korea, but they needed a comeback before hanging on to an 87-81 win. Behnam Yakhchali continues to be a key player as he had 21 points while Arsalan Kazemi had 19 points and 10 rebounds. Oh Se-Keun had 21 points and Jeon Jun-Beom had 20 points in the loss.

In the battle for 5th place, China beat Jordan 86-55, although Amin Abu Hawwas had 12 points. Two of the three most basketball-mad countries in the world faced off and Lebanon entertained the home fans in a 106-87 win. Fadi El Khatib had another fantastic game with 36 points, 6 rebounds, and 8 assists and naturalized player Norvel Pelle finally found some rhythm with 23 points and 13 rebounds. Matthew Wright had 12 points for the Philippines.

The pre-Qualifiers for Europe finished today with only a few spots left up for grabs. The draw for the eight teams will be made on Thursday as they get assigned to the vacant spots in the groups that were part of the main draw.
The first game in Group A did not mean anything as Marcus Eriksson and Sweden won 86-82 in Uppsala. Mario Ihring had 20 points and naturalized player Andre Jones had 15 points for Slovakia. That set the stage for the game in Yerevan that would determine the last spot. Armenia looked to be in good position to complete the surprise, but they could not get anything going in the fourth quarter and lost 83-66. Dzanan Musa has questionable upside as an everyday club player, but in this sort of format, there are few players in the world his age or older who can take over games like this as he led Bosnia and Herzegovina with 21 points. Ryan Boatright had 22 points and 9 assists from the naturalized player position as Arkadiy Mkrtychyan had 13 points and Andrew Chrabascz had 12 points.

The last Group B game did not mean anything for either team. Albania actually had the lead after one quarter in Tirana, but the Netherlands dominated the rest of the game to win 113-37. In the win, Henk Norel had 16 points and 11 rebounds, ex-San Diego player Jito Kok, who is most famous this summer for being the other party in the Danilo Gallinari injury, had 14 points, Jessey Voorn had 13 points, ex-Oregon State player Roeland Schaftenaar had 12 points, and ex-Portland player Thomas van der Mars had 11 points.
http://www.fiba.basketball/basketbal...ore_statistics
Kosovo needed a win against already qualified Estonia to take the last Group C spot, with Macedonia ready to claim the spot if they lost. While Estonia did put in a reasonable effort, the home crowd roared their team to a 75-69 victory in Prishtina. Darden Berisha was brilliant with 28 points and 6 assists, Lis Shoshi, who just finished his career at Arkansas-Little Rock, had 10 points and 10 rebounds and naturalized player Scott Bamforth had 10 points and 7 rebounds. Ex-UTRGV player Janari Joesaar had 13 points in the loss.
http://www.fiba.basketball/basketbal...ore_statistics
In Group D, Portugal needed a win by four points against Belarus in Coimbra to pull even with them in the standings and flip the tiebreaker back in their favor. The game was sent to overtime, which gave them more chances to build a margin, but a 79-78 win was not enough, giving Belarus the last spot. Artsiom Parakhouski had 16 points and 17 rebounds and Mikita Meshcharakou had 10 points to help their team get a satisfactory result.

The U16 European Championships both finished today. A Division was played in Buducnost, which helped Montenegro advance to the final, where they fell to France 75-68. The top five teams also qualified for the U17 World Championship next summer in Argentina, so Serbia and Croatia grabbed places with quarterfinals wins. Turkey took the last place with an 80-62 win over Lithuania. At the other end of the standings, Russia and Finland were relegated due to losses on Friday. Sweden will join them in the next Division B tournament after a 77-44 loss to Germany. The other interesting storyline of the tournament was Nico Mannion of Italy, who tried out for the USA U16 team and was among the last cuts, as he decided to play for the country of his birth.

Serbia
Croatia
Turkey
Lithuania

The day in Beirut started with the Philippines beating Jordan 75-70 for 7th place as Matthew Wright had 13 points. Mousa Alawadi had 21 points in the loss. Fadi El Khatib poured in another 30 points and 7 rebounds, but Lebanon came up short against China 79-78 in the 5th place game. The last medal went to Heo Ung and South Korea, which beat New Zealand again 80-71. Finn Delany had 22 points and 7 rebounds in the loss as New Zealand will be hoping that the experience gained by a young team will help them in the near future.

As reported in its own thread, Marshall was selected to the team:
https://www.usab.com/news-events/new...announced.aspx
https://www.usab.com/mens/americup/roster.aspx
I was afraid that signing an NBA contract might prevent it, but he still gets to play for Team USA. Games start in a week and look to be on ESPN3, although hopefully they get ESPN Deportes or other TV channel coverage later.
It was a fairly quiet day in the international basketball world except for Day 4 of the FIBA Women's Afrobasket, which I covered here:
http://www.womensbasketball247.com/2...4-august-22nd/
Another quiet day internationally, but I covered the last day of the FIBA Women's Afrobasket group stage here:
http://www.womensbasketball247.com/2...5-august-23rd/
Eric Boateng was named to Great Britain's final roster for EuroBasket. They started an exhibition tournament in Poland with an 82-64 win over Hungary. He had 6 points in 14 minutes. Ex-Iowa player Gabe Olaseni had 14 points and 9 rebounds and ex-Duquesne player Kieron Achara and ex-College of Charleston player Andrew Lawrence had 13 points each. Adam Hanga, a 2011 draft pick who seems less and less likely to finally make the jump, had 14 points in the loss.
A couple draws were completed today for upcoming qualifiers.

The teams that did not make it to the main qualifying round will now begin the process of qualifying for EuroBasket 2021. Those five teams plus Switzerland, Denmark, Cyprus, and Luxembourg were drawn into three groups with group winners and one runner up advancing:

Friday marks the start of AmeriCup as Group A starts play in Colombia (Group B starts Sunday and Group C starts Monday). These games will be on ESPN3 (time EDT):
Mexico vs Puerto Rico, 6:30pm
Colombia vs Brazil, 9:00pm
I will try to piece together the other rosters as we go.
Eric Boateng and Great Britain faced hosts Poland in their exhibition tournament, losing 86-76. He had 3 points in 14 minutes. Ex-LIU player Kyle Johnson had 14 points and Luke Nelson, who just finished his career at UC Irvine, Gabe Olaseni, and Kieron Achara had 10 points each. In the win, naturalized ex-Western Kentucky player A.J. Slaughter had 12 points and ex-JC player Przemyslaw Zamojski had 10 points.
Alex Murphy did not dress in Finland's last exhibition. It is unclear if this means that he has been cut from the final squad.
My recap of the quarterfinals at the FIBA Women's AfroBasket can be found here:

Group A of the AmeriCup started play in Medellin with one semifinals spot going to the winner. This group is probably the most balanced and unpredictable and the first day proved that point. Mexico withstood Puerto Rico's second half charge to win 69-66. Ex-JC player Alex Perez had 24 points and ex-UCLA player Lorenzo Mata had 10 points and 6 rebounds. In the loss, ex-Florida player Mike Rosario had 14 points, ex-Nebraska player Jorge Bryan Diaz had 11 points and 10 rebounds, and Tyler Davis of Texas A&M had 11 points and 8 rebounds. Brazil had a tough time with Colombia, but managed to hang on to a 76-74 win. Bruno Caboclo began to prepare for a competition that's two years away as he had 11 points and 11 rebounds. In the loss, ex-Louisville player Juan Palacios had 17 points and 9 rebounds, Braian Angola-Rodas of Florida State had 12 points and 11 rebounds, Tonny Trocha-Morelos of Texas A&M had 12 points, and ex-Valparaiso player Stalin Ortiz had 10 points.

Hosts Macedonia finished pretty far down the standings.

The final games of the FIBA Women's AfroBasket were played and I have a full recap here:
http://www.womensbasketball247.com/2...l-august-27th/
Group A in AmeriCup was already settled after the previous day's games. Puerto Rico did beat Brazil 89-80 thanks to 23 points from ex-Miami player Angel Rodriguez. Mike Rosario had 15 points, Tyler Davis had 13 points, and Emmanuel Andujar had 11 points and 7 rebounds. The big story in the Brazil camp was Bruno Caboclo's dismissal, but ex-Utah player Renan Lenz had 13 points and George Lucas de Paula, who signed with the Rockets, had 13 points. Colombia looked to win one game in front of the home fans, but Mexico was busy trying to maintain their momentum into the semifinals and left with an 82-70 win. Jorge Gutierrez had 24 points, Francisco Cruz had 18 points, and ex-Long Beach State player Edgar Garibay had 11 points. The youngsters put in good work for Colombia again as Braian Angola-Rodas had 16 points, Hanner Mosquera-Perea of East Tennessee State had 15 points and 7 rebounds, and NAIA player Hansel Atencia had 12 points and 9 assists.

Group B started in Bahia Blanca and there was plenty of drama in the first game. Canada put together a hodgepodge of a team focused on winning and trying to prepare for qualifiers with two longtime NBA players aboard. At several points, they looked like they would finally put it together, but the US Virgin Islands kept pulling away to win 83-71. Roy Rana had a disappointing start to his senior career after being hailed the coaching genius after his U19 performance as Sam Mitchell dealt with some late absences and got the win. Ex-Florida player Walter Hodge, easily the best remaining player on his team, led the way with 25 points and 8 assists, Justin Gray of Texas Tech had 14 points and 8 rebounds, and Marist's Khallid Hart and Deon Edwin, who just finished his Kent State career, had 12 points each. Confusing and unsettled rotations hurt Canada as ex-Boston College player and 2015 draft pick Olivier Hanlan was the only player in double figures with 10 points. Argentina is technically just playing to get in rhythm for the final phase, giving them a chance to really affect this group's standings for the other qualifier as they came back to beat Venezuela 67-62 with 10 points from ex-George Washington player Patricio Garino. Ex-USF player John Cox had 16 points and 7 rebounds in the loss.

For some reason, Monday's USA game was listed on WatchESPN, but not currently listed for ESPN3. It is at 5:00pm ET, so I guess we will have to see what happens as the other games are listed along with these:
Argentina vs Canada, 6:30pm
Uruguay vs Dominican Republic, 7:30pm
US Virgin Islands vs Venezuela. 9:00pm
