Extremely interesting article about a man that scammed people, "selling" people mercedez-benz tires (the kind that never show up in the mail), and how the posters at MBWorld have come together to stop him :)

If you don't feel like reading all 36 pages or so of the thread, here are the "cliffnotes":

Supposedly members of this forum have discovered what kind of car he drives, taken pictures of his house, know who his friends are, etc.
Seems like they are trying to get enough evidence to take him to court.

I think this is awesome, how they worked together - heck they even know what kind of digital camera the guy used to photograph his car!

Apparently it's possible this story could appear on the front page of CNN! (If it gets enough comments/votes)

There was a similar case involving a Nissan Skyline in Canada (http://www.wired.com/cars/coolwheels/news/2008/04/carheist). IIRC a guy took a used car for a test drive and never came back. The owner posted about it on a Canadian car forum, including a description of the thief (missing two fingers), and eventually they caught him.

That's awesome. My husband's a regular lurker of a "helping" site, m5board. They're a tight knit bunch there, as passionate about their cars and modding, etc. (some how-to-guides are REALLY detailed.) I'm not surprised they'd chip in to help one of their own.

Much like I think any OTBers would help a fellow scammed member.
